Proposed Field of Study
Applicants are advised to select the Major Field of Study and Subfield in the GRFP Application Module (see Fields of Study in the Appendix of the Program Solicitation) that is most closely aligned with the proposed graduate program of study and research plan. If the subfield is not listed, it may not be eligible for NSF GRFP.
Choose your Major Field of Study carefully.
- Applications must be received by the deadline for the first Major Field of Study designated in the application.
- Applications will be reviewed by experts in the first Major Field of Study listed.
- If awarded, Fellows will be required to enroll in a graduate degree program consistent with the Major Field of Study proposed in their application. A fellowship will not be awarded in a different Major Field of Study from that indicated in the application.
Please note:
Your Field of Study determines the disciplinary knowledge of the experts who will review your application. Applications submitted to a Field of Study not in alignment with the proposed research plan will not be reviewed. If you are offered a Fellowship, it will be in the Major Field of Study that you chose in your application and cannot be applied to another field or discipline for the first year of the Fellowship.
Applications indicating “Other” subfields will be randomly assigned to reviewers in the first Major Field of Study selected by the applicant. “Other” indicates a subfield not included in the list; thus, there may not be reviewers with corresponding expertise.
“Interdisciplinary” designation is collected solely for informational purposes, and applications marked “Interdisciplinary” will not be reviewed by experts in all the fields selected. Applications indicating “Interdisciplinary” will be assigned to reviewers in the first Major Field of Study selected by the applicant, with expertise in the corresponding subfields selected.
